Verrucous Carcinoma of the Oral Cavity: Current Concepts
نویسندگان
چکیده
Oral verrucous carcinoma (VC) is a rare locally invasive tumor. The histopathological diagnosis of verrucous carcinoma should be accompanied with careful identification of tumors with a greater chance to become frank cancers. A comprehensive Google and PubMed search was carried out using “oral, verrucous carcinoma and immunohistochemistry” as the key searching terms. All the articles till date were precisely reviewed and the article was judiciously compiled. It was observed that numerous histopathological, immunohistochemical and genetic studies have been carried on VCs to identify the basis for their noncarcinomatous nature and difference from oral squamous cell carcinomas. The present review elaborates the current concepts of oral VCs regarding the etiology, clinical and histopathological, immunohistochemical and genetic characteristics.

Oral Verrucous Carcinoma and Ameloblastoma: A Rare Coincidence
Introduction: Oral verrucous carcinoma (OVC) is a rare malignancy of the oral cavity that was first described by Ackerman. This tumor is a well-differentiated low-grade, slow growing cancer that is locally invasive without metastasis. Ameloblastoma is one of the most common odontogenic tumors, which originates from the odontogenic epithelium. Verrucous carcinoma along with central ambloblastoma...
متن کاملTissue eosinophils as a histopathological marker in oral premalignant and malignant lesions: a histochemical study
Introduction: Although recent studies show the association of eosinophils with different tumors including oral malignancies, the role of eosinophils in premalignant conditions of the oral cavity is not known precisely. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the number of eosinophils in premalignant and malignant conditions of the oral cavity and its role in progression to malignancy. Materia...
متن کاملCutaneous Verrucous Carcinoma Superimposed on Chronically Inflamed Ileostomy Site Skin: A Case Report
Verrucous carcinoma (VC) is a rare variant of well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) which is usually found in oral cavity mucosa. Cutaneous verrucous carcinoma is a rare entity and in this paper we report a 43 years old man with VC superimposed on chronically inflamed skin of ileostomy site. Previously, he was operated to treat rectal adenocarcinoma and has had ileostomy for six mon...
متن کاملExophytic Verrucous Hyperplasia of the Oral Cavity – Application of Standardized Criteria for Diagnosis from a Consensus Report
Verruco-papillary lesions (VPLs) of the oral cavity described in the literature involve a spectrum of conditions including squamous papilloma, verruca vulgaris, focal epithelial hyperplasia, condyloma, proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and verrucous carcinoma. A majority of the VPLs are slow growing, benign in nature and have a viral aetiology. Virus associated benign mucosal outgrowths are ...
متن کاملVerrucous Papillary Lesions: Dilemmas in Diagnosis and Terminology
Verrucous papillary lesions (VPLs) of oral cavity are diagnostically challenging as they include a spectrum of benign, potentially malignant, and frankly malignant lesions. A majority of the benign VPLs have viral aetiology and include commonly occurring squamous papilloma along with verruca vulgaris, focal epithelial hyperplasia, and condyloma. Current understanding of potentially malignant VP...
